Forests are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. They provide habitat for wildlife, store carbon, protect soils and water, and help regulate the climate. They also supply renewable raw materials and offer important spaces for recreation, education, and experiencing nature.

Why Forests Matter
HessenForst and the Forests of Hesse
Forests shape the landscape and identity of Hesse. Covering around 42% of the region, they provide habitat for countless species, store carbon, supply renewable wood, and offer space for recreation and learning.
HessenForst works to ensure that these forests remain healthy and productive for future generations. Our approach balances ecological, economic and social benefits: protecting biodiversity, strengthening forests against climate change, providing sustainable timber, and maintaining forests as welcoming places for people.
The forests of Hesse are dominated by beech (Fagus sylvatica), which makes up about 35% of the forest area, followed by spruce (Picea abies) at 21% and pine (Pinus sylvestris) at 11%. Around 40% of the forest area also serves recreational purposes.
HessenForst manages 342,000 hectares of state-owned forest and provides professional forestry services to communal and private forest owners across Hesse.
Our approach to sustainable forest management
We manage forests according to the principle of sustainability: using what can regrow, strengthening resilience, and safeguarding biodiversity. A key focus is developing climate-resilient, mixed forests through adaptive silviculture and long-term planning.
Where we provide services for other forest owners, we work with their objectives and support them with clear options, reliable implementation and transparent documentation.
Protecting nature and promoting biodiversity
Nature conservation is an integral part of our forest management. By diversifying tree species and maintaining a mosaic of habitats, we aim to preserve biodiversity and keep forests functional under changing climate conditions.
Recreation and education
Forests in Hesse are an important space for outdoor activities and wellbeing. We support recreation while taking care to protect sensitive habitats. Forest education is part of our mission and follows the principles of Education for Sustainable Development.
Transparency and independent verification
Sustainability needs evidence. HessenForst uses independent systems and audits to make its forest management transparent—for example via PEFC certification (in place since 2001).
